My husband and I have a five year old daughter with special needs. Clara
has Spina Bifida. She is paralyzed from her waist down as a result of this
terrible birth defect. She has to use a wheelchair to get around.
When we take Clara to the park to play, we usually carry her around and
place her where she wants to be. The only thing that Clara can do on her
own is swing - if there is a special swing available - and play in the sand.
Most parks or playgrounds use mulch or sand for surfacing, which she
cannot navigate a wheelchair on. We were so excited to learn that we are
going to have a park available in Hartselle where she can play and join in
with other children.
It is very important to us that Clara develop independence and be able to
do things for herself - even small things like playing with little assistance -
things that most people take for granted.
It really means a lot to us, and will mean even more to Clara and others
with disabilities, that someone is taking notice and working to create
special places for special kids.
Thank you so much,
